Wet Processing-I(Lecture Sheet-5)

Bleaching and mercerization are two common wet processing techniques used in the textile industry to improve the appearance and properties of textiles.

Bleaching is a process in which fabrics are treated with chemicals to remove natural impurities, such as dirt, oil, and other organic matter, as well as any residual color. The goal of bleaching is to create a uniform white or pale-colored fabric that can be dyed or printed with consistent results. The most common bleaching agent used in textile processing is hydrogen peroxide.

Mercerization, on the other hand, is a process that involves treating cotton fabrics or yarns with a caustic soda solution. This treatment causes the cotton fibers to swell and become rounder, which improves their strength, luster, and dye uptake. The result is a stronger and more lustrous fabric with increased absorbency and a smoother surface. Mercerization is often used on cotton fabrics to enhance their appearance and make them more suitable for high-end garments.

Both bleaching and mercerization are important steps in textile processing that can significantly improve the quality and properties of textiles.
